Why local history matters
Ann Arbor was founded in 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, who bought 640 acres of federal land for $800 and registered the plat with Wayne County that May as 'Annarbour' -- a name later explained as a nod to their wives, both named Ann, and the bur-oak groves covering the site.
