A Town Re-Founded Around a River Crossing
Ypsilanti's first settlement, Woodruff's Grove, sat on the Huron River's east bank from April 1823, but when road surveyors platted a crossing nearly a mile north in 1824, landowners Augustus Woodward, John Stewart, and William Harwood combined their holdings there in 1825 to found the townsite -- named for General Demetrius Ypsilantis -- that grew into today's city.
